Gravel & Aggregate Tonnage Calculator

Convert an area and depth into tons of gravel, sand, stone, or topsoil using the material's density — for driveways, base, and fill.

How it works

cubicFeet = length x width x (depth_in / 12) x (1 + waste% / 100). cubicYards = cubicFeet / 27. tons = cubicYards x density / 2000.

Worked example

20 x 10 ft at 6 in of gravel (2,700 lb/yd3): 100 ft3 = 3.70 yd3 = 5.0 tons.

When to use it

  • Typical densities (lb/yd3): gravel and sand ~2,700, crushed stone ~2,800, topsoil ~2,000.
  • Aggregate is sold by the ton; order a little extra for compaction and spread loss.
